In what was an all-Russian final, Safina rallied from a set down to nudge Dementieva in three sets to bag her maiden Tier I title. Safina, who beat world number one Justine Henin of Belgium and eight-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams of the US earlier in the week, capped her dream run in the German capital with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win. Safina, who last won a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title at Gold Coast in 2007, collected the top prize of $196,600 while seventh seed Dementieva, a two-time Grand Slam finalist, walked off with $100,000 in her bag. With the second Grand Slam of the year barely two weeks away, Safina's triumph clearly suggests the Russian is the player to watch as the tennis bandwagon prepares to move to the French capital for the clay challenge at Roland Garros. It was Safina's first Tier I triumph following the 22-year-old's losses in Rome (2006) and Charleston (2007) finals. Safina, sister of ATP Tour star Marat Safin, now leads Dementieva 3-2 in their five WTA Tour meetings. By virtue of her win at a sun-soaked Steffi Graf Stadium, 13th seed Safina is now ranked world number 15, a jump of two spots. It was the sixth career win for the Monte Carlo-based right-hander. "I am the happiest person in the world right now," Safina said after her three-set win. "It is the biggest success of my career," the Russian added, almost out of breath. |
