The Parisian crowd at the French Open - already known for eagerly jumping on ANY opportunity to vent their apparently boundless discontent - decide to take it one step further in a display of collective insanity never seen before or since on the Court Central or any other tennis stadium for that matter.Grosjean thinks a shot from Nadal landing on the baseline is out and wants the chair umpire to have a look at the mark. The chair umpire refuses to do so, pointing to the rule that a player should halt play IMMEDIATELY - which Grosjean obviously didn't - otherwise the player loses the right to challenge. Grosjean - dismayed by the fact that his serve was broken in the process - doesn't accept this, or just refuses to accept it... and then everything starts going awry by way of the crowd - probably well aware of said rule... - standing as one man behind their countryman, booing and putting their thumbs down non-stop for well over 5 minutes. Grosjean at first feeds the crowd, but then after a while seems to be reluctantly switching between embarrassment and standing firm in his decision. After the players finally resume play, the crowd then continue showing their frustration by booing every single time the umpire calls the score... This video goes on for a little more than 10 minutes, but in actual fact boo's could still be heard accompanying the calling of the score - albeit gradually diminishing - until nearly an hour after the incident!INTERESTING FACT: This match took place on the very same day the European Constitution was up for a vote in France, of which the result was already predicted to become a resounding "NON!".... Makes you wonder what the crowd were actually carrying on about here, either consciously or unconsciously. :) |
