For a super-treat, we went back to find the earliest footage we had of Chris & Martina... it was an enormous occasion, very much like a grand slam at the time: the Virginia Slims Championships featuring the top 8 players in the world. Chris & Martina met in the final. Unfortunately for Martina, Chrissie was in full 'Ice Maiden' focus, and she turned the match into a virtual Evert Highlights reel during a long stretch of games where she barely lost a point. But most fascinating is that the pattern of play & commentary is almost identical to some late 80s matches at the end of their rivalry... which begs the question, how much did the dynamics of point construction really change over the years and how much was just perception? You be the judge!! |
