McEnroe had defeated arch- rival Ivan Lendl in a four -set quarterfinal. In the semifinal, he would meet Connors (another arch rival) who he had defeated in the Wimbledon semifinals that year. Meanwhile Bjorn Borg, then ranked #1 and McEnroe's third and greatest rival, had won the first semifinal earlier that day defeating Johan Kriek, in 5 sets.
